'Emanuel Burton of Kendal', Lake District.
This is a charming 8-day painted face clock in an oak and cross banded mahogany case. The 12” face is in excellent condition.
The spandrels have tastefully painted flower and strawberry motifs with gold-coloured edging. The numerals are Roman and Arabic. The seconds dial and date dial are both in working order and the winding holes have elegant brass rings.
The movement is very clean and in good working order. It rings to a bell on the hour, and keeps good time. The hood has a flat top and is supported on beautiful wooden mahogany pillars. It has a characterful brass knob on the door.
The well-proportioned trunk has mahogany cross banding, the full-length door with working lock and key. The base has ogee feet. The case has a beautifully-aged patina and really does stand out in quality.
Several Emanuel Burtons are recorded as working in Kendal from the 1700 to the 1800's. This particular clock looks to date from the 1760s.
Overall, this is a beautifully kept, fully-functional Georgian Longcase Clock.
