Lofthouse Antiques Collection › FEATURED: Grandfather Clock By James Blair of Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Scottish. 8-Day (SOLD)

FEATURED: Grandfather Clock By James Blair of Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Scottish. 8-Day (SOLD)

£995.00

JAMES BLAIR of KILWINNING, AYRSHIRE

James Blair is a noted Scottish clock maker. A book entitled “Time Piece: A History of James Blair” is available from Amazon, and the Kilwinning Heritage Centre is interested in hearing from anyone who owns one of Blair’s clocks.

James Blair made the turret clock for Kilwinning, which still stands on a tower built on the site of a medieval monastery. St Columba brought early Celtic Christianity to the town.

This is a fine example of a Scottish George III clock.

The 14” dial has Neo-classical designs to the arch, Roman and subsidiary Arabic numerals, a seconds dial and a calendar dial (calendar dial not functional).

The 8-day movement is clean and works well. It rings on the hour to a bell.

The case is flanked by spirally turned pillars with brass cappings, and quarter columns. There is some very attractive stringing to the hood. The case door has a working lock and key.

H = 82” W = 18.75” D = 10”
