8-DAY BRASS-FACED BY JESSE TORKINGTON. C.1775
This is a lovely restored 8-day brass-faced clock by Jesse Torkington of Newcastle-under-Lyme.
The face has a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals, a seconds hand and a working date aperture.
The movement is in good, clean condition and strikes on a bell. It has recently been restored.
The oak case is in excellent condition and has a pleasing patina. The trunk door is flush fitting and features a glass bull’s eye.
The hood has wooden pillars and glazed apertures to the sides.
H = 84” W = 17” D = 9.5”
Jesse Torkington was apprenticed to the famous John Whitehurst of Derby.
Several features of the movement and case suggest this is a very early example of Torkington’s work.
A similar clock was recently sold by Bonhams for £1468.
