JOHN CHAMBLEY of WOLVERHAMPTON c.1790
This is a good example of a Penkridge-born John Chambley clock. It has an attractive
painted dial housed in a rich dark mahogany case.
The face is in exceptional condition with flowers in gilt spandrels to the corners and an
oval painting of a lady with a gryphon to the arch flanked by gilt-painted spandrels. The
numerals are Roman and Arabic. There is a working seconds dial and date aperture.
The movement is in excellent working order, and keeps good time.
The hood has a break arch with brass finials and brass rosettes depicting
lurchers/greyhounds, and is supported on reeded wooden columns with ornate brass
cappings.
The rich mahogany case has a lovely patina. It has a full-length door in flame mahogany,
with mouldings to the edges,a working lock with key, and a brass escutcheon.
The front edges of the case have quarter-round fluted columns which, like the hood, have
decorative brass cappings.
The base has a central panel with mouldings.
