'Thomas Stripling of Lichfield.'
This Lovely 30-hour brass-faced clock dating from the mid eighteenth century is housed in a plain medium/dark oak case and made by the well-documented Lichfield clock maker, Thomas Stripling.
The brass face has Roman and Arabic numerals, and a working “sad face” calendar wheel.
The chain-driven movement strikes to a bell on the hour. It is clean, and keeps good time.
The hood has reeded pillars with brass cappings.
The trunk is plain and in good condition except for a minor loss of edging to the trunk door. It has a nice patina. The door has a brass escutcheon, and a working lock with key. There is the usual age-related shrinkage split to the door.
The backboard has suffered in the past from minor worm and has been strengthened. Although the worm has been long dead, we have thoroughly doused the trunk in a treatment.
We currently also have for sale a clock made by Stripling’s apprentice, Thomas Gilbert. Upon Stripling’s death in 1775, Gilbert went into a business partnership with Stripling’s wife before setting up on his own in nearby Rugeley.
