Grandfather Clock by 'William Porthouse of Penrith,' 8-Day, Circa. 1750.

WILLIAM PORTHOUSE of PENRITH c. 1750

This is an 8-day brass faced oak clock by a much respected clockmaker. The clock is elegant and well-proportioned.

The face has a working seconds hand and date wheel. It has a matted centre and Roman and Arabic numerals. The winding squares are ringed.

The movement is clean and in good working order. It keeps good time.

The hood has a caddy top, ornate hinges, and a brass escutcheon.

The trunk has a moulded door with a brass escutcheon and a latch. It has had some minor restoration, and has been French polished.

Please note: this is a heavy case.

William Porthouse, Penrith. A prolific and well respected maker.

Recorded 1706 - 1795

William Porthouse is mentioned in Britten (Old Clocks and Watches and their Makers) and the Porthouse family is discussed at length in J.B. Penfold’s book “The Clockmakers of Cumberland” (1977)
