Lofthouse Antiques Collection › Grandfather Clock by 'Williams of Newport' 8 Day, Circa 1775

Grandfather Clock by 'Williams of Newport' 8 Day, Circa 1775

£849.00

Williams of Newport c.1775

This is a Welsh 8-day clock made by one of the well-known Williams family.

It has a silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals, which encloses an attractive diamond-shaped etched brass centre. The face has a seconds hand.

The movement is good and strikes the hour on a (quiet) bell. The clock keeps good time.

The solid oak case has a flat-topped hood supported on square reeded columns, and the door has a lock and key.

The Williams family were prolific clock makers for several generations. Although not named on the clock face as being by Griffith Williams, the style and the Newport origin indicate it was probably made by him.

He lived from about 1730-1788.

H = 76.25”  W = 19”  D = 10”
